The Great Pyrenees, or Pyrenean Mountain Dog as they are known in France, is an extremely old breed of dog and has been used for thousands of years to protect livestock. The breed is most often white, but can be found having shades of tan or grey on their faces. Statistically speaking, only one Great Pyrenees in four will have a completely white coat.
Although the Great Pyrenees are known as strong independent working dogs, they are very laid back dogs personality-wise. They are very tolerant of animals and small children. The Great Pyrenees make an excellent family dog as they have a wonderful temperament suited for getting along with the small furry and not so furry family members as well as being very protective of their homes and everyone within it.
This breed is very territorial, the one problem with that is to the Great Pyrenees, their territory is as far as they can see and they have excellent vision! The breed has a tendency to want to explore and wander and they are wonderful animals to take along if you enjoy hiking and trail walking.
